How to Choose the Best Cricut Machine

You may have heard of Cricut machines before, but you might not be exactly sure how these machines work. Cricut machines are electronic cutting devices that can draw and cut various materials such as vinyl, cardstock, and regular paper.

What’s more, some Cricut machines can cut through leather and balsa wood. Each Cricut device has a blade that cuts the design out of the chosen material with perfect precision.

Many people opt for using a Cricut machine to make precise cuts or designs, and it’s a favorite choice for arts and crafts. Some arts and crafts even become small businesses, and some of the Cricut machines are intended for commercial use to make it easier to produce in bulk.

Choosing the optimal Cricut machine for yourself can be a real challenge, especially if you are still a beginner in the heat press world. There are so many of them, and they all come with various unique features, so it can be hard to decide what you need.

Because of that, we have compiled a thorough buying guide to help you out throughout the process – so make sure to keep on reading!

Types of Cricut Machines

Before you start to look into the specs and features, different Circut machines offer, you should first decide what type of Cricut machine suits you best. Generally speaking, there are five basic types of Cricut machines – Explore 3, Cricut Joy Explore Air 2, Cricut Maker, and Maker 3.

In essence, these devices are very similar to one another as they all offer digital die-cutting, and they can write and cut different materials. However, the real difference is that some machines can cut a wider variety of materials. Each device comes with particular features reserved for that type of machine exclusively.

For example, the ‘Explore’ series are mid-range, and they generally sell the most, as they offer the most features people are looking for. The ‘Maker’ series are decent, and they provide top-notch service, as they can cut more materials and have more tools you can use to make arts and crafts.

The ‘Joy’ model is the ideal option for creating a new project. Cricut Joy machine is highly compact and portable, so you can set it up anywhere and start doing a new project wherever and whenever.

Do note that some of the series has several different models – and in our opinion, the newest model always works best. Its features are usually fine-tuned to work better, so it’s always better to stick to a unique technology.

Cut & Draw

Once you have found a Cricut machine you like, you should establish what kind of materials and design you mainly want to do on your Cricut. It’s important to note that all Cricut machines can cut designs on 20+ different materials, such as vinyl, cardstock, regular paper, and iron-on vinyl.

So, generally, it can be tough to make a mistake regarding the materials, as basics are covered on each Cricut device. The same goes for drawing –  all Cricut machines can draw on the selected materials with a marker or pen.

If you want more options, it’s best to consider the ‘Explore’ series, as they cover over 100 types of materials to cut and design. If you are looking for more than that, the ‘Maker’ series offers over 300 varieties of materials, even wood and most fabrics out there.

When it comes to the cut and daw, you must keep in mind the cut size, as some Cricut machines are very limited when it comes to the cut size. ‘Explore’ and ‘Maker’ cut sizeable projects. In contrast, Joy can cut significantly smaller projects – so if you are looking to do more extensive projects, Joy might not be a proper fit and specific ‘Explore’ and ‘Maker’ models.

Software & Connectivity

Connecting via Bluetooth is almost an essential detail for Cricut machines – and luckily, most machines come with Bluetooth connectivity. So, you can forget about more USB cords in your home – with Bluetooth, connecting to your device is so much easier.

What’s more, every Cricut machine can connect with the Design Space by Cricut. It’s free to design software you can use to upload your unique designs or share them with the world. If you wish to download designs for your machine, you should think about a Cricut Access subscription, which can open the doors to more specific plans for your projects.

It can be a real challenge for accessories to pick what you need and what you absolutely cannot live without. All Cricut models come with plenty of different accessories that enable you to do fantastic projects just as you imagined.

Whether you want to make fun cards for holidays to decorations and commercial products – you can do everything, but pay attention to the accessories that come with the chosen Cricut machine. Accessories can make it easier to achieve the results you are looking for, and they are usually specific to particular projects.

You can only use Cricut Joy with two different tools – one for cutting and writing. ‘Explore’ machines go further, and they offer, besides cutting and writing, coring, foiling, and so much more. ‘Maker’ goes all the way – it can be used with 12 types of tools, including engraving, debossing, and anything else you could imagine.

When discussing the tools and accessories, you should consider whether you are looking for a single or a double tool holder. Most Cricut machines have a double tool holder, so you don’t have to switch the tools all the time, but if you want to stick to the compact ‘Joy’ series, you have to keep in mind that you will have to switch them often during project-making.

If you wish to do projects at home, and your arts and crafts space isn’t exactly ample, it’s essential to keep an eye on the size of the machine. Cricut offers various machines, and they can vary significantly in size – from 4 to 15 pounds.

So, if you are looking for something you can easily store away when not in use – Joy is indeed the smallest machine of them all. Explore and Maker are still moderately compact, but they are sizeably larger than Joy.

Explore 3 is one of the best Cricut machines you could ever hope to use in your lifetime. Whether you need it for home use or commercial purposes, the Explore 3 will provide fantastic performance and excellent results.

What truly makes this product stand out is that it’s somewhat affordable, but it still provides a lot for the money. Explore 3 even has the option to create projects using smart materials, which is undoubtedly an advantage compared to other affordable options for a Cricut. Another great thing about it is Bluetooth connectivity which makes everything far more manageable.

Many people believe that Explore 3 offers the same features as Explore Air 2, but that’s simply not true. Despite the common misconception, Explore 3 still provides more to the user and the option to work with smart materials; this device comes with a large trimmer and roll holder, making everything much more straightforward.

Compared to its predecessors, Explore 3 has a far stronger motor, which allows the model 3 to run twice as fast. You have the option to use six different tools with this cutting device, along with the foil transfer tool and the fine point and deep point blade.

The Explore 3 stands out because it can make cuts as long as 12 feet in one go, which is a true advantage, and you don’t even need a mat to do it. It cuts over 100 different materials, so you have a variety to choose from without worrying that you might pick something that your cutter doesn’t agree with.

Another advantage is that you can simply print and then cut, making your projects easier to finish. The cutting device comes with a complimentary Design Space software, which you can use to try out making your designs.

However, it’s important to note that you can do small commercial projects with Explore 3. For projects on a larger scale, this device will not suffice, so if you are looking for a robust, commercial cutter, you will have to stick to the high-end models.

We have mentioned the Explore Air 2 before, but it’s time to truly get in the review to see what it’s like. Let us start by saying this is a suitable, mid-range cutting product.

Explore Air 2 is a cutting device mainly intended for hobbyists and completing hobby, small-scale products. It is not intended for commercial use, and it will not suffice for any kind of business purposes, as it’s far too small for it.

Out of all Cricut products, the Air 2 is the go-to cutting product for beginners, and people are still learning the curve of cutting devices. It is certainly not the most potent cutting device on this list, but it’s one of the best products you can use at home to make a gift while still grasping it.

Air 2 is straightforward to use, and it comes with pretty clear software, which is incredibly easy to follow. Despite being beginner-friendly, this machine is still rich with features even experienced users will appreciate.

It cuts over 100 types of materials, including iron-on, HTV, premium vinyl, foils, poster boards, and cardstock. There are five tools users can play with for cutting, scoring, etc.

Air 2 can cut 12×12 inches and 12×24 inches of the fabric. It comes with three blades – a fine point, a deep point, and a bonded fabric blade, which allows the user to cut leather or reinforced materials.

What we liked about the Air 2 is that it has a double tool holder, so you don’t have to switch so often – you can hold a blade and an accessory. What truly makes the Air 2 stand out is the ‘fast mode’, which cuts the time to do a project in half so that you can be done in a pinch!

For home use, the Explore Air 2 is the optimal choice. It allows you to personalize your space and clothes, create unique gifts for friends and family, etc.

  • Three blades included
  • Fast mode
  • Easy to use software
  • Option to use 100+ different materials

  • Hobby use only

Sometimes, you are looking for a portable product that will get the job done on the go. If you are looking for something that works on craft fairs or just have small projects to complete, here comes the EasyPress Mini!

This tiny Cricut machine is here to dazzle you with its size and performance. Yes, it’s small compared to any other Cricut machine – with the dimensions of 4 x 3 x 2 inches, and it only weighs 12 ounces, so it’s the definition of portable!

For creating small details or a small print, the EasyPress Mini is there to do the work. It’s accurate, it works well, and what’s better, it’s affordable, and it takes up virtually no space, wherever you place it.

The ‘Mini’ version is very similar in performance and appearance to its full-size Cricut machine, EasyPress 2. The Mini heat press will do the project promptly and do the job well for every hobbyist out there.

The device looks very simple, and it’s relatively simple to operate, meaning that even beginners won’t have too much trouble trying to figure out what’s what. For working around contours or seams, this heat press will work its magic without an issue, thanks to the tiny ceramic plate working around contours or seams.

For sewing projects, the EasyPress Mini is unmatched, as it can easily be navigated between buttons, and it can be used to apply even the smallest prints. If you want to make the precise application on hats, shoes, and small bags – stick to the Mini.

However, you must remember that this Cricut machine is called Mini because it’s small and can only work on smaller projects. For anything, even mid-sized, you will have to use a larger machine to do it.

  • Perfect for small details
  • Does the job well on challenging surfaces
  • Easy to use
  • Portable

  • Cannot do anything more than small projects
  1. MugPress

Custom mugs have been the ideal present for anyone from family to acquaintances or work friends. So, this Cricut machine is the answer for anyone looking to make customized mugs – we present you with the MugPress!

MugPress is a Cricut machine that prints the selected design onto mugs, and its software is so straightforward that it couldn’t be any simpler. It comes with a single button you will need to press – so it’s foolproof and doesn’t require extensive reading of the user’s manual.

Sometimes, you are looking for something specific and unique – and that something is MugPress. It is essentially a heat press, but its one and only use is to make customized mugs with the design. It does a fantastic job at making mugs, but do note that this purchase is not enough – you will likely have to purchase many other things as you go.

So, to print something in your MugPress, you will have to have a Cricut cutting machine of sorts. The cutter will have to make the transfer on an infusible ink sheet – no vinyl or another material as it just won’t work.

Not all Cricut machines can be used to make a print for the MugPress – only the Explore and Maker models, which aren’t exactly the cheapest on the list. However, once you do cut out the design – it’s an easy-peasy process.

You just take the transfer, wrap the mug, and put it in the MugPress. Then, press the single button and let the MugPress do the magic!

The products made by the MugPress are durable and of high quality. Any mug you make in the press can be washed in the dishwasher and used in the microwave, so it’s the same as anything else you can buy in the store!

  • Makes customized mugs
  • Simple to use
  • Makes durable products
  • Dishwasher-safe ink

  • It cannot be used without a Cricut cutting machine
  1. Joy

Cricut Joy is one of the products we have already talked about a lot – along with the Explore and Maker products. But now it’s time to get into the review and see what the Joy machine is really about!

Joy is one of the newest products Cricut has introduced to the market, and it truly offers something unique. It’s compact, with straightforward software, and it’s easy to get a grasp of. It’s also relatively affordable, so consider this device for your cutting needs if you’re on a budget.

You can use Joy with over 50 materials, which is undoubtedly far less than the Explore and Maker products, but it’s still enough to do any hobby. Joy is compatible with paper, iron-on vinyl, and even some types of faux leather.

Joy stands out because it’s ideal for home use, as it’s the definition of compact, similar to the EasyPress. You can even use it at fairs and take it with you, as it doesn’t take much space anywhere.

However, you cannot expect Joy to do large-scale products; it can cut designs as wide as 4.5 inches. Because of that, the Joy machine can make stickers, label stickers, small cards, and various tiny projects – be that for business or hobby purposes.

It offers less versatility than a larger Cricut cutter, but it still does a good job but on a much smaller level. Joy might be a good spot if you want to try cutting machines but aren’t sure where to start.

Joy can be connected via Bluetooth to other devices, but it does come without the USB port to remain compact indeed. Joy is easy to use from a computer, but you can also easily set the design using the Joy mobile app, which has proven to be relatively straightforward.

  • Very compact
  • Easy to use
  • Bluetooth connection
  • Perfect for small projects

  • No USB port
  1. Maker

We have discussed the Maker 3, but now it’s time to review its predecessor, the Maker, thoroughly! Maker has plenty to offer to your average hobbyist, but more importantly, it has plenty to provide to a commercial user.

What makes the Maker machine stand out compared to other machines is that it offers more and does a job more quickly. The Maker, just like its successor, can work with over 300 different materials, and it provides top-tier cutting of it, too.

However, the Maker cannot work with Smart Materials, which we find an actual flaw of this machine. Smart Materials can help users work twice as fast, but it’s, unfortunately, something reserved for the Maker 3.

This cutting machine comes with 12 different tools to use to do a project – so you can forget about a device that only does the cutting and scoring. With the Maker, you can even engrave and write with this one!

This is certainly no new machine on the market, but it still offers relevant features to the user, such as Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port. With it, you can easily connect your laptop or personal computer and make magic! The existence of USB ports is rather important to us, as it allows you to work even if you are having issues with Bluetooth.

This cutting machine works fast, enabling you to finish your projects quickly, especially compared to Joy. Note that this is a large-scale machine, and it takes plenty of space on your counter or other working space.

The Maker might be the perfect addition to your business, ass it does a lot and very quickly. However, this does not mean the Maker is affordable; on the contrary. If you wish to invest in this fantastic cutting machine, you will have to set aside quite some money, so keep that before you add to the cart!

  • Works quickly
  • Bluetooth and USB connection
  • Works with 300+ materials
  • 12 tools available

  • Doesn’t work with Smart Materials
  • Expensive
  1. Cricut Hat Press

Making hats has been the worst challenge out of all crafts regarding clothes. Making T-shirts or tote bags is a breeze and always has been, but hats can make all of your employees feel frustrated because of the curves.

Using regular heat presses doesn’t always do the job, so Cricut has created the Hat Press – the ultimate heat press for hats. This heat press does the job relatively fast, so you can even use it on the go to make hats!

The product is very simple to use, as it comes with a simple power button, and that’s it. The device is packed with safety features, such as auto-shut-off, which makes the machine shut off after 13 minutes of inactivity, helping you feel utterly safe whether you turn the press off or not.

The Hat Press is compatible with HTV materials and infusible ink, which we deem critical for Cricut machines. The device has 6.5 by 4.5 inches, so it’s small enough to fit anywhere without taking up any precious space.

Ths heat press has three temperature settings – low, medium, and high, with low and medium coming with a 60-second timer, while the high setting has a 90-second timer.

Luckily, you don’t have to remember any of that, as this heat press is compatible with the Cricut Heat app, making everything a breeze. The app is easy to navigate, and it just takes a few taps before you start pressing. Once you pick out the desired settings, the device will begin to heat up and complete your project!

Hat Press comes with great accessories – a safety base, a hat-pressing form, practice designs, heat-resistant tape, and a user’s manual. The product comes with Bluetooth connectivity, but it doesn’t have a USB port, which is a shame, considering it’s a fantastic product otherwise.

  • Compatible with the Cricut Heat app
  • Safety features
  • Easy to use
  • Accessories included

  • No USB port
  1. AutoPress

When AutoPress came out, it certainly made an impression. This heat press has been the answer to everyone’s trouble – its primary goal was to make pressing projects so easy, and without a doubt, this goal was completed!

The Zero Effort feature is the feature that made AutoPress so famous as soon as it was available on the market. This feature makes it a breeze to press anything – all you need to do is close the press, and that’s it.

The user needs to pick out the temperature and the time, while AutoPress does the rest. The device automatically adjusts the pressure compared to the product inside, so you don’t have t worry about picking the wrong pressure; the press will do it for you.

You don’t need to watch the press as it works; it comes with auto-release, meaning it stops as soon as the timer goes. AutoPress is compatible with all the cutting machines made by Cricut, and it’s compatible to use with any kind of ink you set your mind to.

What’s more, AutoPress comes with a pretty straightforward control pod, which you will have no trouble using even as a beginner. There are four preset settings to help you reduce the time making a new batch, but you can still fine-tune everything to your liking using the computer app.

We didn’t like it as much that you cannot fine-tune the press without a computer. AutoPress connects via a USB port, and it requires an Internet connection to work, so make sure you’re connected before you start.

The heat plate on AutoPress is relatively large, so you can do large products or many products at once and be done in a pinch. The AutoPress is suitable for home use, but the large heat plate can easily be used in businesses, as it has more than plenty of space to complete large batches!

  • Easy to use
  • Preset settings
  • Auto-release
  • Large heat plate

  • Cannot be used without a computer

Bottom Line

The Cricut company has plenty to offer to the arts and crafts market with its products. The products’ palette is broad, and it has something for everyone – hobbyists and business owners.

Professional cutters can do the job swiftly and let you get on with your projects. Other fun machines such as the EasyPress Mini and the MugPress make customized presents extraordinary.

Cricut has something to offer everyone with the vast array of products, but the absolute best Cricut machine of 2022 would have to be the EasyPress 2. It does a good job, and it’s still relatively affordable!
